What is Permanent & Semi-Permanent Makeup?

Enhancing Natural Beauty: A Permanent Makeup Artist's Perspective on Permanent and Semi-Permanent Makeup

As a seasoned permanent makeup (PMU) artist, I've had the privilege of witnessing the transformative power of permanent and semi-permanent makeup on countless clients. These innovative techniques have redefined the beauty industry, offering individuals a convenient and long-lasting solution to enhance their natural features. The term permanent makeup is often used to cover a variety of procedures and many clients don’t realize that most procedures which are referred to as permanent are actually semi-permanent when executed correctly. I also want to stress the fact that I believe the goal of permanent or semi-permanent makeup procedures should be to enhance or bring back natural features not to over exaggerate them beyond natural norms. That’s why I focus on Hyperrealism and natural looking PMU. In this blog post, I'd like to share my perspective on what permanent and semi-permanent makeup are, how they work, and the incredible benefits they bring to those who seek to simplify their beauty routines while boosting their confidence.

What is Permanent Makeup?

Permanent makeup, often also referred to as micropigmentation or cosmetic tattooing, are procedures involving the precise implantation of pigments into the dermal layer of the skin. The goal is to enhance one's appearance by mimicking the look of makeup, achieving results that can last several years or more. From eyebrows or lashes to lips and beyond, permanent makeup offers a range of procedures tailored to meet various beauty or paramedical needs.

What is Semi-Permanent Makeup?

Semi-permanent makeup shares the same principles as permanent makeup but with one crucial difference, when properly applied, it gradually fades over time. The pigments in semi-permanent makeup are supposed to be implanted into the upper layers of the skin, which naturally exfoliate and cause the colour to fade slowly over time. This allows for adjustments and changes as one's preferences evolve, making semi-permanent makeup an adaptable beauty solution without the longer term commitments of truly permanent procedures.
